Sayings, mottos, "pithies", & provocations in poetry & prose, aiding & abetting popular philosophy-----------------------------------------------------------This small collection of thought-provokers exists because thought does but happiness doesn’t. If determinism, free belief, possible causes and education get your goat, so too will thought and its provokers. If you have worked hard you will have got lucky (or “someone” got it wrong). If we get knowledge through experience, why do we have to get it on our own, and how do we measure experience, and what is experience? If we think a lot we are sure to rise a lot in social status! If we ponder freedom we know that freedom is not free. If we start laughing when we eat, when we sleep, and when we exercise, our DNA jumps joyously up and down, and we outlive the unsmiling. What a load of………..provocation! And that’s why thought-provokers are here – in poetry and prose! Examples •There is some dignity in fallibility, none in a human god. (Agreed?!) •You just have to believe in lies and everything becomes easy, even murder. (What a lie!?) •Scorn what the past thought and always remember to believe your scorn is better than your elders’. •To the thoughtless and the selfish relativity is a sweet god. To blurb-end “Let’s sing a rowdy song / To devastate the great…” always remembering we are “free” but freedom is not, and the degree to which we think will determine the degree to which we will rise or not rise or fall.

“Thought-Provokers” is a mix of very short stories, poems, and one-liners that are meant to, as the title suggests, provoke the reader. I especially liked the short stories, such as the very first one in the book. Having read one of Jonathan’s previous books gave me even more insight into some of these selected thoughts; but even without reading any of his previous works, you will likely find some of the thought-provokers funny, some witty, and others even disturbing. A quick read for the evening to get you thinking about the less discussed questions of life during the night.Product details

ThoughtProvokers Bad Dreams Mr Jonathan Finch 9781540723772 Books Reviews
Jonathan Finch has written a collection of short stories, and poems, that are meant to provoke a readers thoughts I enjoyed the short stories as I'm not one for poetry although Finch's poems are rather enjoyable and for me to say that, they must be good. One thing Jonathan Finch can do it write. He's such a good writer that I sometimes wish I could write as well as he does. Thought Provokers is a well written book and I especially enjoyed the books short stories.
I expected a philosophical collection but I found a readable collection of pieces, some short, some a bit longer, in poetry and prose. There was quite a lot of satirical stuff about UK educationists and popular media figures like Paul McCartney and David Frost who the author feels disgruntled about. I did find some of the pieces extremely provocative. For example, "Just believe in lying and everything becomes easy, even murder." The author also believes "Relativity is a narcotic..." so in the end there is no doubt in my mind that the book makes its reader think and be critical of well-established thought!
Nice enjoyable book of poems and prose. Some of the content were in fact thought provoking, such as Resembling a Drowned Rat, The Joke, Thieves Will be Prosecuted and the Case of Jones. The latter of which I found to be the most thought provoking. I didn't quite get the concept of bad dreams. When I think of bad dreams I think of something nightmarish, but I didn't get that from any of the pieces. I found some humor though, in Resembling a Drowned Rat, and to a smaller extent from The Joke. For poem lovers, I think this is a nice read.
"Thought-Provokers" was just that, and I enjoyed reading the poems and the prose. There were some very brief messages. "Man conceives infinity but through that conception infinity dies." I liked that a lot because of the paradox. It gets you thinking! There were some extremely satiric pieces, too, which made me wonder if the author was at all happy with the state of England. The poems were enjoyable and almost all of them rhyme which I liked. Even though the overall tone is very serious, there are some light moments, for example, number 18, CROWDS, where the author writes "I don't like crowds - except when there aren't many people around." "Thought-Provokers or Bad Dreams" is a mixed bag and well worth the read. I wondered about the sub-title but after reading INFANTICIDE (number 47) I got the message - a very bad dream.
